Avocado and Banana Mousse

Avocado and Banana Mousse

Avocado and Banana Mousse.

Chocolate mousse has always been my absolute favourite dessert.  Little did I know before having kids, that it doesn’t have to be loaded with sugar, cream and chocolate. This Avocado and Banana Mousse has no added sugar in it at all.  It’s naturally sweetened with dates and of course the banana. And wait for it…. It’s still delicious!  The kiddos love dessert and anything brown to them must be ‘Zert’.  They love this after a meal and I don’t feel too guilty giving it to them even if they didn’t eat all their dinner.

Adding More Fat.

Avocado is naturally high in good fat.  If your children will eat them on their own, that’s fantastic!  Ours have decided they’re not so keen on them anymore, so this Avocado and Banana Mousse is a great way to hide it.  Again because Norah doesn’t eat heaps, I add coconut oil to this mix too, just to up the calories and the fat content without her really eating anymore.

This Avocado and Banana Mousse is so quick and easy to make, it's naturally sweetened and it tastes great! The kids love it and they think they're getting a special treat.

Baby Food.

I wish we had started the twins on solids a little differently than we did.  I was all about purees and not so much finger food.  I’ve heard stories from mothers that have used the baby led weaning method and had great success and I wish I had given it a go.  I was too worried about Norah not getting enough calories and couldn’t get my head around the fact that I was calculating fats in food that would just end up on the floor anyway.  In my mind now, I think doing a bit of both would have probably been a happy medium.

This Avocado and Banana Mousse recipe would work great as a baby food.  I know it’s not the best idea to start children on very sweet foods because than they’ll likely turn their nose up at different flavours later.  Possibly removing the dates would be a good way to go if you were making this for a younger baby.  I used tinned passionfruit pulp in our recipe too, but for young children I would recommend straining away the pips so there’s not crunchy bits within the mousse.  To be honest our kids prefer it without the pips too, but they’ll still eat it if I miss that step.

Ingredients

  • 250 g avocado 53g of fat
  • 2 bananas
  • 10 dates
  • 50 g coconut oil 50g of fat
  • 1 small tin of passionfruit pulp
  • 2 tbsp cacao powder

Instructions

  1. Soak the dates in some hot water while you prepare the rest of the ingredients.

  2. You should be able to easily remove the pips and skin from the dates after soaking for a few minutes.  Once they are ready, place them into a large jug.

  3. Place the jug on top of your kitchen scales to easily weigh the rest of the ingredients.  Add the rest of the ingredients to the jug.

  4. Blitz all the ingredients together until smooth.

  5. Portion out the mousse into containers or moulds.  They can be stored in the fridge and kept for up to 4 days or frozen and thawed when required later.

Recipe Notes

This makes 5,  110g serves (depending on the size of bananas) at approximately 15g of fat per serve.
