Cooking with Herbs Outside

Cooking with Herbs Outside

Cooking with Herbs Outside.

People sometimes ask me what I do to keep the kids entertained when I’m cooking.  I try to mix it up and give them new things to do.   They love when I’m able to include them in what I’m doing.  We often sit together at their little table to grate or chop up the veggies.  Of course they are even more interested when Oma let’s them watch.

Sometimes however there’s too much going on for me to give them opportunities to help.  This is when I need to get creative.  I hope that I can share some helpful tricks with you to give you a little more time to cook and calculate fat content.

Today I took the twins’ little wooden kitchen outside and I gave them some herb shakers.  This caught their attention immediately.  Not only was their kitchen in a different spot, but they also had real ingredients to ‘cook’ with, just like Mummy.

It didn’t take long before all the herbs were dumped out of the shakers and all over the top of the kitchen.  The kids then proceeded to ask for more.  Obviously I wasn’t going to let them tip out everything from in the pantry.  Instead I showed them how to scoop it up and drop it back into the bottles.

Smelling the herbs was their favourite part of this experience.  They took it in turns to hold the bottles up to their noses and ‘sniff’. This is a skill they are yet to master and it’s hilarious to watch their little noses screw up.  Often snotting over the bottle rather than actually smelling.

This truely kept them busy for at least half an hour and they didn’t really need any help from me.  I was able to potter around in the kitchen and watch them busily cooking with herbs outside.  I wonder what they will ‘cook’ next?
